Every review that one can find about 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens from net will tell you that its dimensions are 92mm x 189mm (or 3.6" x 7.4").
However, I was able to find right keywords for figuring out its dimensions when lens is fully extended to 400mm. I would assume that diameter is still 92mm (or 3.6"), but whats the new length? (something longer than 189mm, but ...)

270mm without the hood, 355mm with it on...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

276mm from back of mount extended
269mm from front of camera when mounted fully extended
+hood 354mm
hood adds 85mm - but is 92mm in length itself

its about 120mm at its absolute widest when the hood is on including the tripod mount... (as in hood backwards, retracted and in your bag :) tthe hood is 115mm in diameter max

Thanks to joeseph and Super-Nicko for taking measurements.
It sounds that when fully extended its roughly about 5cm longer than 300/4L IS without extender. Doesn't sound much, but relatively speaking its roughly 25% longer than 300/4L IS, which sounds whole lot.
I guess I just have to test it out myself to really figure out how different it is to use those lenses are at 300mm and 400mm.

100-400 is definantly big, definantly awkward to have on when your not out doing a photography trip - meaning out with the family and have it swinging from your shoulder - plus your camera bag plus a pram and baby etc etc.. hehe i just did this at the zoo and it was a bit of a PITA (pain in the you know what)

Still do-able - and im 6ft tall and a builder so im not lacking strength - although my cams have grips which add some weight too and my out and about kit adds up to about 8kg in the bag.

It doesnt fit in my lowepro 200AW so ive bought a 300 AW and it fits fine :)

Actually using the camera and lens - no dramas - i dont have any trouble handholding. If your sitting in one spot shooting wildlife - it can help with a monopod to steady your shots (yeah even with IS)

Ok do you mean a LowPro Vertex 200AW..how would it not fit in there. I can fit my entire set of gear but my macro lens in my Crumpler 7million dollar home. and its not very big
I dont think this lens is really that big. it def is not really all that heavy either. Its only awkward trying to get use to the pushpull

My gear
Fuji X-T3, Fringer Pro EF-X, 14 f2.8, 18-55 2.8-4 OIS, 50 f2, 55-200 3.5-4.8 OIS
