well, SD is no less "special" than CF which is no less "special" than MemoryStick or...or..orr...they are all just different types of flash memory. Though there are exceptions in that there are SD/CF/MemoryStick cards which are netwrok cards or micro HDD's and several other bits of functionality...but that is a whole different issue...

In essense the camera's all use some version of a "standard" memory card. It's just that, now for the really oxymoron part, there are different "standards"...confused now? ;)

Although not too much. You can get a 4 gig off ebay for a reasonable price. In Jessops i'm sure they're only fifty quid or something. It's worth it for the 40D...

Look into the 30d. Used they are in the 500-600 range, often including the battery pack----tons of camera for that price, expecially when they were $1200 two years ago new.

Well, there are 3 different rebels out at the moment, but there are lots of differences. I would recommend reading dpreview and using the comparison tool to see. The rebel line and the XXD line are pretty different, the XXD's are bigger, have a tougher build, and more controls on the camera, as well as a better focusing system, viewfinder, burst speed, and other specs. That is not to say that the rebels aren't great cameras, they are, it just depends on what your priorities are. The XSI for instance has the most megapixels between all the models(rebel and XXD) now as well as the most advanced live-view. It also uses SD cards. However, you do pay a premium for it as it is canon's newest model. It also has a viewfinder that is bigger than the other rebels, but not as bright as the XXD series.

There is a lot to consider. I would recommend reading through the reviews (dpreview.com as well as others). You will need to consider what is important to you, as well as your budget. I also recommend going to a store to try them out. You may feel the rebel line is just too small or that the XXD line is just too big and heavy.

I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending one over another until I understood a little better what you are looking for. read the reviews and comparisons, then come back here if you have any questions.

I have a canon powershot S5, Im very new to this so maybe Im not giving the correct numbers?
On the lens (kit lens) it says 6.0-72.0mm 1:2.7-2.5 USM

I used a S2 before I got my 40D and had VERY LIMITED results. Occasionaly I would have a shot as desired. Someone told me that was a downfall of the P&S cameras. I really enjoyed many of the benefits of my S2 but when I got my 40D, whoa......:oops:alright I'll quit before I start bragging.

On the 40D you also benefit from Live view which is great for portraits or macro and as opposed (i think) to the rebel, you can fully operate an ETTL flash from in camera menu settings and therefore slave off it with Canon wireless... all advanced, but all useful in the long run.
