Got my new 580EX II today, wow is it nice. I thought the Sigma EF 500 DG Super was nice, hell now it seems like a cheaply made flash. The metal mount on the 580 and the lock is sweet. It is a big step up. The 580 is so much nicer than the Sigma, money well spent in my opinion.

Agreed!

I've done two "photo shoots" with just the one flash, and I've had some really good results so far!

They are indeed quite nice. I wish they were a little less expensive, but i like mine alot.

I own both. There is a definite difference in build quality. There are other notable differences in specs and features.

However, it's impossible to tell from the pictures which flash was used.

The 580EX II is definitely a professional's flash unit. Whether the additional cost is justified really depends on the user.

I've used both Sigmas and Canon's and given the choice I will always pick the Canon over an equivalent (well... closest match anyway) Sigma. In my opinion the Canon flashes are probably overpriced but they are much better units both in build and functionality. Lenses are a different story.

With the current Canon rebate going does it make the 580EX II more of buy now?

I've got 2 500 DG Supers, but I've been thinking about replacing them with 2 430EX (possibly 430EX II) and a 580EX II acting as the master. I like the idea of controlling FEC from the 580 to the 430s. Or am I missing something?

Not really. I just like the overall results of the 580 better than the 430. I own both, but the 430 stays in my car with the G9 now.

The Sigma had been acting up lately, so it gave me a reason to get the 580. The instant rebate is $30 off.

I find the 430 a lot easier to carry around because of it's smaller size and weight but the 580 is my workhorse.
