Hi all,
I have a 580ex11 hooked up to a wireless receiver, and have it set as a master for the canon infrared to trigger the 430ex. It triggers the 430 fine, but the 580 will only work on ettl, and not very well(low light). It won't work on manual at all. does anybody have any ideas on this? is this normal? the 580 works fine as a master on camera. I haven't tried it on cord though but I would expect it to be fine, unless they don't work as masters through the pc. Any info would be a great help

Mark

What happened when you set the master to M? What camera setting?

Hi Lotto,
I'm sure I'm not missing something on the master settings, its as easy as 1,2,3 isn't it. set as master or slave or off, then set manual, ettl, multi

the camera is set on manual, i think it was f8, tried various speeds from 1/30-1/250 . if I set the master(580) on manual it doesn't fire, but still emits an infrared to the slave which fires. If I set the master on ettl it fires, but only at a low output, not good enough to use, still emits infrared.

The 580 EX II has a PC jack that is NOT active while the camera is in the Master-Manual mode you are trying to use. You must either have the "Re-Wire Mod for the 580EX II" done, or use a "Hot Shoe to RA Mini Plug" adapter to connect the 580EX II to the PW through the hot shoe of the flash.

ah, thanks Michael. I had a thought thst this might be the case, but couldn't figure why it would have a pc plug and not be able to work like this. A bit dissapointing

Yeah, that kind of sucks. Also the max sync speed with the manual master is 1/125.
