I have an opportunity to get a used alien bees kit. Can anyone tell me if they think this is a good deal. It is being offered for $650.

2 strobe heads alien bees B400's
2 light stands.
2 umbrella's
2 soft box
barndoor
back ground light stand stand
Studio flash transmitter
extra replashment bulb
all the wires, plugs, etc

What other equipment would I need (aside from a backdrop)? What questions should I ask specifically about the equipment?

I am new to this but would like to get a decent starter set, and I thought this might be a good way to go.

First thing I would do is check out what this outfit would cost new. From the look of it when I quickly checked the Alien bee site price does not look bad. But I would check out condition of the accesories and lights to see if it was worth it John

I would not even think of purchasing the package unless there is far more detail about the various components so that an intelligent decision can be made. There's just too much generic non-information about things like the stands, umbrellas, softboxes, etc., to determine if the pricing is appropriate. Then, you'd need to know something about the condition.

Are the stands and modifiers from alienbees? If so depending on the condition it may be a steal. Who is the seller? Someone you know?
Ask to see pics of the equipment, how old or when purchased, model numbers of the equipment.

I don't know the seller. but he is local and said it was barely used. When I asked for the specifics on the equipment, he replied that there was too much to list and that I should just come over and check the stuff out. I suppose I could go over there, take pics and then see what the deal is. He originally was trying to sell it all for $700 but no one has bit on it yet.

It's a craigs list deal.

Check it out. It's definitely a little less than new. Just this kit with two b400's, 2 lightstands, 2 umbrellas, and two carrying bags is $600. Transmitter and receiver is about $130. The BG stand could be anywhere from $30-$100 depending on what type of stand it is. Barndoors are about $50 if they're the ones from the AB site.

The strobes are only 160w/s though. I don't know if that's a concern of your or not.

Ed. Their softboxes start at about $100 for the smaller ones. Forgot about that.

My village called. I was told that they missed me.
