Well, at first I loved this lens. i found it really sharp and useful. After some time using it, I now realise that it is absolutely useless.

Why would I need a 100-400 when I have my old 18-55 kit lens. It has already more than enough reach to do wildlife! Here is a proof with an uncropped shot taken with this poorly rated kit lens :D

A squirrel at 100 feet?

Too much stuff, not enough shooting time.

Why is there always someone trying to bring some rationality in the debate? :p

Leave the 18-55 lens lying around long enough and that squirrel will try to eat it and will probably be successful with all the plastic it is made of. Let him try eating that 100-400 "bazooka"!!! :D

Your shot of the squirrel is very good! Especially, the little bit of sparkle off the eye. How did you get so close? The squirrels in my backyard run if I get anywhere near them. I need to use my 70-300/DO on those guys.

I've found that backyard squirrels and park squirrels are two distinctly different beasts! Park squirrels, and park ducks and park geese, all equate me with food, and if anything I'm the one trying to keep my distance!

That's a good point!

Thanks! It was shot in London and I think this guy (and a few others) just thought that I may have some food for him ;-)a

There are some more shots of those cute vermin over there https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=522836 ;-)a

Exactly. The only difference between you and me is that as I don't leave in a country where we have those grey squirrels (we only have red ones which are beautiful but much more difficult to find), I try to attract them :o (but without food)

Eh, I dunno. That pic is OK.

But if you used the 100-400L, you could have got a pic of his retina.;)

Cool, have you got some flying shots of seagulls or eagles with that lens? How about dogs jumping up and grabbing a frisee out of the air? :-) Just kidding ya, nice shot!

I do actually have somewhere a flying seagull with this same lens. I'll have to see if I can find it for you :p

I was once sitting on a bench by a vending machine on the University of Texas campus in Austin, when a squirrel came up and begged for food. I ignored him, so he climbed up onto the bench and continued panhandling. I again ignored him, and finally he climbed onto my leg which was a bit disturbing. Some squirrels will stop at nothing.
