Just looking for an approx. number of RAW, L, and RAW+L files on a 40D? I know it will vary by ISO, conditions, etc, so just an approx. would be grateful. Need it to determine what size cards I should get. Thanks

Thanks. I guess I'll pick up 2-4 4GB cards then. No need to carry around 400+ RAW+L files, 200 or so should suffice. I don't plan on taking more then 200 pictures at a time.

You say that now but wait until you start pressing that shutter button.

I had to switch from RAW to JPG at a show I went to as I had took 1300 pictures over the two days!

I have now got 3 4Gb cards and another on the way. They are so cheap nowadays.

I agree!
When I got my XTi, I was thinking about a 2gb card because I thought I would NEVER shoot more than 500 jpeg large photos at a time... Thankfully I went with the 4gb! Every time I took the camera out to shoot, I shot way more than I ever would expect!
Now with my 40D, and the 6.5 fps, I am looking to buy a few more cards! 1.1k large jpegs is just not enough! :D

When 8 GB compact flash is easily bought for under $50, getting a small card is simply not an option.

Yup, the 20D/40D get the 8gig cards. I went and gave away my others(1 and 2gigs), then I got the 1D which of course takes the 2gig so I had to go and buy a few.

I wish they were that cheap in this country. We pay about that amount (around £25) for 133x 4GB cards. Most 8GBs seem to be about £45 and upwards.

What's the point of RAW+JPEG? One less step in your PP? I don't think the savings are worth the loss of disk space.

Its convienient if you want something you can quickly show. I was taking pics with my family last weekend and decided to do raw+jpg since they wanted copys of them. That way I had something that I could tinker with and I didnt feel rushed to do it.

But for anything else where I wont be sharing with the family its either RAW only or JPG only, as currently I have 2 CF cards. 8gb for raw, and 2gb for JPG. Tho I rarely use up the 8gb, even doing raw+jpg on my XTi.

Exactly. There are times when I'm busy with work and going out where I don't have much time to do any editing of any sort. Or when I take pictures the people that I end up going with are really antsy to get them right away. A few weeks ago I ended up going to the water park with my cousin and his wife watned me to upload all the pictures that I took of her son that night.

My family especially is less impressed with the end result of the pictures that I take, they're more interested in the fact that I have pictures period. My parents are old school, they honestly showed no reaction when I showed them 1080i and then Blu-Ray for the first time. My mom asked if there was a difference between DVD and BR at all. And where the majority of the people I associate with are all using P&S, even large JPEG's taken with a DSLR are a HUGE step up from what they're used to.

There's times when I just sit back and reference the JPEG's first in order to determine whether or not I even want to put it through PP.

It still seems like a waste to me, unless your computer is from 1986 converting RAW to jpeg should take you all of 3 seconds per picture. That's all of 25 minutes for 500 pictures.

Which won't fit on your CF anyway since you're double stuffing. :)

I do switch back and forth between the manual/creative modes depending on what I am shooting. If I'm just doing snap shots and there is no composition (as stated, its just the point of having taking pictures) put in portrait mode and snap away, L+fine is more than enough. But if I'm out and about even with family/friends I leave it in Raw mode.

You know this whole discussion is pretty mute if we all pony up another $50 for another 8gb CF. I vote we all go out and buy one, but let me buy some sandisk stock first.
