I am ashamed to post pictures of such poor quality but I would like some help verifying that this is a Golden Eagle. These were taken last week in Yellowstone National Park. I used my 300mm F4L IS with 1.4x hand held and these are awful 100% crops. He/She stayed a long way away.

Definitely not a golden eagle.

I'd be more inclined to say it's a Swainson's Hawk, but I'm not positive.

Oops!!! I am even more embarrassed about thinking it was an eagle than I am over the quality of the pictures.

Thanks for the help.

Great focus on the second shot, even though the bird is facing away from you. You caught the "bird" against a really busy background, and that's tough. Nice job

amaing captues, but I have to ask - are you using a UV filter on your 300? I've seen these kinds of distortions before and they are all traced back to a UV.

Great job with these shots and you certainly shouldn't be ashamed in any way. There are some really credible things happening with these shots, especially with the last one with the bird banking on the tree background. You kept focus on that shot and that is impressive.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

No filter, just a 1.4x TC. I am not sure why the images look like this. I have other shots with the 300 and 1.4x that are very sharp. I just assumed it was due to the heavy crop.

Could be. Really cool capture. That's a massive hawk. It really does look like a golden eagle in the first shot. Yellowstone is pretty amazing.

Which TC did you use, and what was the aperture?
