I picked one of my favorite shots from last weekend in Victoria. Although the colours are quite vibrant, I thought the range of tone in this image worked well in B&W.

I really like the rather harsh shadows from the clear sunny late sun. Or is it the early sun?

I definitely prefer the color version....unfortunately now I'm hungry again! I can almost smell the aroma of the restaurant coming from these shots (and I -LOVE- Chinese food!)

Dim sum....yum!!!

Peace,
Jim

Thank you Robert. It was late afternoon (~4:30), and I also liked the harsh shadows; especially those coming through the slated balcony.

Gail & Jim:

As for colour vs. b&w I've always prefered images in colour. I am trying to improve my b&w photography in order to improve my ability to see different tones in a scene rather than just different colours. Most of the images I make seem to be too busy for b&w so that's something I'll have to look at in the future.

Thank you for the responses :)

Interesting point about B & W vs color. It seems to me that with monochrome you are forced into keeping the composition simpler because of not having color as the #1 discriminant (the yellow airplane in the deep blue sky, or the red hat in a sea of black hats, etc.).

Without color you have to have something else, such as tone, shape or texture to discriminate between the primary subject and all the other elements.
