Hi All:
I just bought a Canon G6 with the idea of learning to use a digital camera before buying a pro camera. I really wanted something very light for now. I know Photoshop CS well and have many years experiece shooting with Olympus OM3 film cameras on film sets and for NY newspapers. At the moment I am looking at the instruction manual and feel dizzy. Would really appreicate any suggestions about how to go learn how this camera works. I can't even figure out how to shoot in the manual mode:-(
Thanks very much.
Mara

Take it slowly. No one has learned new camera in a day. What do you need to know first, look those things in manual. Basic stuff is of course file format choice and choosing ISO, aperture and shutter speed. I would start by using P and Av modes until something else is needed.

Easiest way to move shots to computer is getting a card reader - insert the card and it looks exactly like a hard disk. You do not have to install or use any Canon software that way.

Check this out, perhaps it's easier than the manual: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canong6/page5.asp (external link)

Pekka, thanks so much. Your link looks perfect for me, exactly what I need - with pictures! Will follow your advice about modes to learn first... I have a card reader from my Canon Powershot 500, same size, so I am fine with that. Will come back to this interesting forum, looks like such a great place to learn.
Thanks again.
Have a great new year.

It is a lot easier than the manual, and it answers questions the manual does not. Thanks for the link. Happy New Year!
