I've had one or two IT issues this week that have prevented me from posting any pictures from last weekend's Dunlop Great & British Festival from Croft Circuit. Hopefully they're all fully resolved now.

#1 I don't use the 2XTC on my 120-300 that often, but took shots with it at this event. I wish it would consistently produce results like this

#2 Although not managing grids the size of the opening two rounds, the NSSCC still produced a great variety of cars and some good racing.

#3 The Mini Miglias were great fun to watch

#5 The Radicals were pretty quick around Croft.

#6 Back to the NSSCC, and the fantastic 6R4 of Middlebrough's Ken Hall

#7 BMW 'Minis' racing in the Mini Challenge Series

#8 I'll finish with a shot from the Dunlop Sport Maxx Cup. This Nissan 350Z was extremely photogenic.

All of the shots were taken with a 1D mk II and a Sigma 120-300 f2.8. #1 used a 2XTC and the remainder were either taken with the bare lens, or with a 1.4XTC. There's more pictures to see on my website for those that are interested: -

As usual, any comments or feedback would be most appreciated.

Cheers,

Simon.

Lovely shots Simon. Another Mini lifting its' back leg - really cute! I know the radicals aren't renowed for producing the best racing but shot #5 is a cracker.

Which teleconverter did you use in #1, a Sigma or Canon? Were youy using AF with it? The shot is very good with a 2x TC

Thanks Dave. I thought the Radical Club Cup produced better racing than the SR8 brigade.

As for the shots with the 2XTC, I used the Sigma one, and was using AF with it, although I did pre-focus with it. These shots are a couple of other examples of shots I was happy with: -

The main problem I have is that it is totally inconsistent. These shots are spot on, but I have others that are unusable - there not out of focus per se, just very soft. To be honest, I have little confidence with the 2XTC and hence rarely use it. Would I buy one again? Well for this application, probably not.

Cheers,

Simon.

Lovely those Simon with the 6R4 and NSSCC pack shot being my favourites.

The 2x TC is an interesting beastie. Like yourself i've found it can be hit n miss but it is a compromise after all. If you want to try mine for comparison i usually carry it with me...call it nostalgia;)

What you need is one of those 500mm thingies....then again i can miss shots with that too, but that's me being useless :D

Hi Simon,
A very good selection, but the Radical with
the lifting wheel, exhaust heat, sharpness yet action blur makes it my pick.

I do like the Mini, and the yellow Seat, both colours that photograph well.

Re the Seat, and the driver Hollamby.I bet it was his Dad I used to watch in Super Vee single seaters years ago,and he was quick,Olly was his name.

You have done well withe flying 6R4,tricky exposure that.

Was very ,very interested to read about convertor.
Seems to me most x2 ones have issues, whether Canon or otherwise.
My Tammie x2 is not very good...........,but the 200-500 Tammie is alright for the money as long as you pre focus in the area you want to shoot, then let it adjust with AF.

Cheers,
Pons

Thanks Geoff.

The 2XTC is a compromise, there's no doubt about that. I think I would be less frustrated with it if it was just consistently average. However, I end up with either something that I don't consider usable, or something that blows my socks off whenever I get it out the bag. I might just take you up on your 2XTC offer next time we're at Croft.

As for the 500mm, I'm working on it! Nothing for sale just now though.

Great shots Simon, was wondering when you were going to post some.

You could also have a go with my Canon 2x as well :)

Thanks Peter.

I was slow off the mark in posting these. The company I use to hot my website was so concerned about me they decided to change my hosting login password to bolster my security. However, they neglected to tell me they'd changed it for 36 hours so I had no way of logging in. Evidently they'd done the same to a large number of other clients as their support system was inundated. Then once I could login, I found that their ftp service wasn't working properly. Anyway, we're all sorted now.

Cheers,

Simon,
