I have read many many threads about the 40d and 450d, trying to decide which would be better for my purposes. I will be new to this type of camera having only used P&S in the past. Recently I came into a bit of money and decided this would be my one chance to finally get a decent camera.

If I was to buy the xsi I would get a battery grip for it, so when figuring out the price difference between the 40d and 450d it's only about $100. I live many many miles from any camera store so realistically can't go and try each one out to see how it fits in my hands. I'm a woman with average to large hands.

I want a versatile camera as I like to shoot pics of everything! Mainly wildlife, landscape and car races. (Macro looks very interesting too)

So, based on all that, any suggestions on which way to go?

Go for the 40D and you won't be disappointed. It's a very versatile camera.

For the price difference, definitely the 40D. Ease of operation and usability, better AF, and a whole host of other goodies. Definitely worth the extra $100 difference.

definitely 40D. price difference is so small now. 40D gives you a lot more control and speed. IQ is tho probably the same.

Either camera will shoot wildlife and landscape. If you are serious about car racing, then choose a camera with fast autofocus.

+1 on the 40D....
Now for lenses...wildlife, landscapes and auto racing covers a large area. There's no one size fits all lens for that range. You are aware of that, right?

yes, I was thinking of the EF 100-400 L IS USM, and the EFS 10-22 USM. What do you think?

The 450d's sensor has an additional 2 megapixels (although the difference is negligible), while the 40d has a stouter build. But, the 450d with a battery grip will have a larger, heftier feel, along with the convenience of a vertical shutter release and extra battery life in the field.

Either one will be an excellent choice. Happy shooting!
