Canon SD850 Shutter Time Help

Hi i recently went to Zion and wanted to take some pics with the shutter open of the river, to give it a nice effect, however whenever i set my shutter time at anything over 1 second all i get is a white image. Am, i doing something wrong? can someone help me please

I would guess the scene is too bright so it's just completely overexposed. Long exposures work best in low light. If you're going to try it in bright light, at least make sure ISO is set as low as possible.

ahh thats it, thank you, all i needed to do was change the iso setting from auto to the lowest now it works, i wish i would have known this before i went. But thanks :)

Great.. glad to help! Though I would have thought if the ISO was set to AUTO that the camera would have shot with a low ISO anyway. Only if you had it set to high would it be a problem. (Of course, the lighting and everything you're using now for your test isn't the same as at the river so it may not be a fair test.)

Even at your lowest ISO a 1 sec. exposure will be overexposed on an SD850 in daylight. For long daylight exposures you'll need an ND filter good for around 7 stops as well.

I've seen magnetic lens adapter holders which could be used; or, since you're going to need a tripod for those long exposures, you could even try just holding it in position. Or recognize you may be outgrowing the capabilities of an SD and move to something with more user controls.
