Card reader. It's much faster and you don't use the camera's batteries while downloading pictures.

All of your thoughts is EXACTLY what i thought...Then someone told me today that the constant removal and insertion in and out of the camera, will mess it up...They made it seem like it was a MORTAL SIN!!! my PC tower has a reader...

Most PC towers (mine for sure) use USB 1.0 and is very slow. Using a external card read has increased the download times by a factor of 10 for me.

Dissenting opinion here - I use the USB cable - seldom remove a CF card except to rotate them for a rest.;)

Mind you I have two machines and while the photo pooter is copying the images, I go to POTN and read a few lines, so time isn't an issue.

Oh - have to go - it's finished dl-ing.

I don't think there is a 'best way,' it's just what suits you personally. I used to always transfer via USB with my old A60, but when I got my 400D I bought a card reader and much prefer it.

There actually is best way. All my 1d cameras have only USB 1.0, so considering I need to get photos down as fast as possible, and considering I actually use more then 1 card, there is best way... card reader ;)
