Which metering setting would you recommend for shooting surfing?

Thanks,
James

Manual, for sure, set it up with chimping, then shoot away

"Manual" is not metering. Manual is a shooting mode. I am also one for manual mode - to me it's just so much easier than playing with a semi-manual mode (AV, TV) and dialing in exposure compensation constantly for the changing light.

When I shoot surf I stick to spot metering because most of my scenes are pretty evenly lit or I know what look I want to go for. I tend to meter off the surfer.

You have to be careful though because with spot metering and strong back lighting you can really blow the highlights.

Isn't manual exposure same as manual metering?

What I mean, is I would meter it manually (by taking an CWA exposure, then shooting a pic of a surfer showing skin tones, chimp the pic, then adjust until the skin tones are nicely exposed), with manual exposure obviously.

There are typically three metering modes your camera is equipped with: Spot, Evaluative, and Center Weighted. Shooting modes include: Manual, AV, TV, P, etc. While it's true Manual Exposure will get you "manual metering" of sorts - you can dial the aperture and shutter independently - you are actually obtaining your light meter reading by using one of the three modes I listed above not by using the shooting mode.

Check this link for a decent informational article about metering and how to use it. LINK (external link)

Sometimes you can overexpose for the effect, see below. But for magazine quality stick to the advice above!

Damn, if you had the face more, thats cover. Still a sick shot, great wave spray. Little red in the face but that could just be the differences between our monitors, awesome job.

Thanks. His face isn't red on 2 of my monitors, but it is on my phone... so I don't know what to make of it.

Chock that up to monitor differences, the only thing that you can really go by is a print, in which, Im sure, his face wouldnt be red.
