Well I'm looking for a monitor for photo editing...kind of a mind numbing experience really.

I've been looking at the HP LP2065 for awhile now, but I know I probably won't get an S-IPS, so I'm looking at other options.
NEC has some options that I wouldn't mind stretching my budget to, but they can be a little hard to find and there seem to be a lot of similar models with only slight differences. For the record, quality is more important to me than screen real estate to a point.

Specifically I'm looking at these which are in the $500 range:
NEC LCD1990SX
NEC LCD1990SXi
NEC LCD2070NX
Apple CD 20"
HP LP2065 (part# EF227A4)

I think all of these are 8-bit panels, not 10/12-bit.

Dell actually has the 1990SX in stock, so I was thinking about getting that one. There is also a SpectraView version of that monitor for twice the price (SXi-SV). NEC lists the color gamut of the 1990SXi-SV model at 69% of aRGB, so I assume the SX and SXi are basically the same. They don't seem to get into the 90+% aRGB range (which I assume are the 10/12-bit panels) until you spend about $1300 and at that point I'd probably get a Lacie or a "cheap" Eizo...but I really don't have the budget for that.

Is searching for a quality LCD for around $500 simply pointless or are these worthwhile options?

Edit: I also found via DPR thread about the LP2065 that

The two versions of the LP2065 are Mfr# EF227A8 and EF227A4. Most dealers will show which part number they have. The S-IPS panel is the part number ending in "4" and runs about $150 more than the lesser.

The EF227A4 goes for around...you guessed it $500. I guess that is the cost of entry into the S-IPS game if you want any sort of certainty about what you might be getting.
