First Show

Happy New Year all,

I'm trying to figure out how to do my first public show. I've thought of trying to get gallery space here at the college as a student, but before I ask for space I thought perhaps I should decide how the show will be formatted. The areas available are typical art exhibit rooms, good overhead light...

#1 - What size prints should I use?
Most of my stuff is 8x10 but that's due to printer size restrictions. I can do some poster size on a campus epson, and have also thought of getting a Canon i9900 to do 13"x19" prints "in-house".

#2 - Like all photographer's I consider my work mediocre, so how do I decide on what to pick for the show?

Talk to people who have curated a show. Check with a local gallery and ask for their advice (if you catch the right peson on a good day you will get priceless advice). Ask the folks who have curated other shoots at your school, even if not photography related. They might be able to give you some insight. Lastly, ask some friends. Explain that you only want to show the very best images and tell them that you are too close to the work to be objective.

Or, forget all that. Decide what you like and go with it. I mean, who is the artist here?

I think 8 x 10 is good for most photos, as long as they are matted. Certain shots , such as panoramics, might need the 19 in width, but that would be unusual. Get all the advice you can, but only you can decide what says what you want to say. It would be rare that you really like a shot and others don't. If that happens to you, learn from it for the next opportunity.
