Today I received my Canon 55-250mm IS lens and of course with a full-ish moon I had to try it out, even on my wobbly old $5 special tripod. ;)

Anyway, what can I do to make it better? I realize this is not the idea length for such shots. I have something a bit longer, Sigma 70-300mm APO DG, which will arrive on Monday. It was supposed to be here today but, it was too hot for the UPS drivers...about 110-degrees in the shade...so, it was delayed and no chance to compare.

Here are the particulars and the pic:

thanks Scott!! I learned a lot about using the HSR adjustments in PS to get closer to the actual color of the moon based on looking at the real NASA and other color images of the moon. I was frustrated in the original in that I could not get rid of the magenta tones, which should not be there, in the original in post #1. Finally I got it about an hour ago:

Let me know if this looks OK too. I really need sleep now, the better half is up visiting her Dad so I have nobody to tell me to just go to bed... ;) Besides this is far more interesting than sleeping!

EDIT: oops...HSR = HSL (sigh...typos will be the death of me yet.)

Weird...Just weird, this floating planet just out there, it seems so close when you get a good full moon. Almost like you could just hop and American Airlines flight and be there in 3 hours.

Space is crazy.......... Sorry, great shot too! :)

Oh, I get what you are saying completely...I wish last night has been one of those super magnified HUGE full moon nights. I forget the name of the phenomenon.

BTW, it is technically not a planet...it's a satellite or a moon to be exact. :p

I wish my Sigma had gotten here on Friday, but the hot weather caused a delivery exemption. And I cannot blame the UPS guys one bit this time...it was DANGED HOT...but as soon as it gets here I will get a new set of pics and compare the detail levels.

I always was fascinated with astronomical pictures when i was a kid. It seemed like so much magic to me. And this now was my first pic of the moon taken from my back deck. Makes a guy feel like a kid again... :)

HSR adjustments...what is that?

Great shot, great IQ!

HAHAHAHA...D'OH!! It's what happens from staying up all night working on the moon shots and posting at, oh, wait, it was only 12:32am so that is NOT late for me...so, chalk it up to D'OH, another typo...

Of couse I mean HSL processing...d'oh!! hehehehe...sometimes I just do things like that. :D

I too am very happy with the IQ on the lens. I have noticed that some of my long distance handheld shots are not great though. I do, however, feel it is user error not the lens. In this case the tripod made it all possible.

luigis:

no, you ae correct it's a waning gibbous moon a day after full I believe. But for me it's the same as the real full moon. Next month I am hoping we have nice weather here so I can go get a nice clear shot at a higher elevation. Plus I will have the Sigma 70-300mm in hand too and can see what difference the extra 50mm gets and how bad my tripod is because it is cheap and wobbles. So, w/o the IS/OS on this Sigma there might be sharpness probs even if I use a fast shutter if the tripod moves even a bit.
