Testing the Canon 100-400 IS USM on a airshow!

I was in doubt if the 100-400 IS USM L on a 40D was able to do what i wanted!

I used it at the airshow of the Royal Netherlands Airforce!

Ive mad 2785 shot!!

I was impressed by the results!! A hit rate (in focus) of 85% in burst mode
on moving planes! (Fast moving)!!

The Sharpness of the shots (i think) are great! The Focus speed was amazing
and the Tracking mode of the Camere 40D and the Lens were awesome!

The push pull mechanisme works great (after a few hours of practise) recomposing is done in a split second!!

Photos look ok to me, well done and hope you enjoy your new lens..

I think the 100-400 is the defacto air show lens from prior discussions. Some people use primes, but if you need a zoom, the 100-400 is a wonderful lens for the activities. I had many keepers from my outing as well with my ol' 30D.

There is an airshow here next weekend, but the 100-400mm is too rich for my blood. I'll have to contend myself with shooting the planes on the ground!

Some great shots to be had on the ground too. If you can get close to the take off/landing areas, you might be able to get some great shots of the landings! Put a 2x on the 135, and you would have a 270mm at f/5.6, that would be some pretty good reach for the show.

Renting a 100-400 IS USM is also a very good option! (not expensive)!

I was in doubt a selling my 100-400 and buy a Sigma 300mm 2.8 (with 1.4TC and 2TC)!

But the good advice of a few forum members convinced me to keep the 100-400 IS USM (and i am glad i kept it)!
