I am new to taking half decent pic's have just bought a 400D. was playing with longer exposures today what do you think, and please be honest.

The long exposure effect worked well on the water however the overall image appears out of focus. Were you using a tripod?

Yerp, used a tripod, took the shot on auto focus, it is cropped a bit so dont know if that has made a diference

The water effects look good, but I agree with harlo about the OOF. Also, looks just a bit overexposed (at least on my monitor).

The EXIF data doesn't seem to be intact.

An chance of posting what settings you used? ...

Thanks for all the above, I appreciate all your comments, it might help me take better pictures.

The settings i used for this shot were TV 1.6 AV32 with an iso of 100.

I was playing with lots of other settings but either got just a white picture or no effect with the water. thats the nice thing about being a complete novise, practice and playing.

I'm pretty much a novice myself. Even though I've been shooting digital since 1996, I've pretty much let the camera do the work. It's not until 2 years ago I started to try to actually develop some photography skills.
Here is a shot I took trying the same concept as you. It was shot at F13, 1/20 & iso 400. I braced myself against a tree (had no tripod at the time). It came out a little soft but I sharpened it somewhat in PSP.
