Hi all,

Managed to get down to Sydney for a few days last week and of course, took my 40D along for the ride. Decided to attempt a hand held HDR utilising the 40D's 6.5fps [I doubt really whether I'll need the tripod again for HDR's; there was just no movement between the shots]. Three shots were taken [-2,0,+2] using the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-f/4.5 USM.

Tried not to "over process" this one ...

f/11, 1/50, ISO 400 @ 16mm

Any C&C welcome ...

Very nicely done. I'm aware that many do not like or appreciate HDR, but this treatment appears very well done to me.

This is moving more towards art than photo. I like it. The angry sky adds drama, was this a sky replacement or as is?

Thanks all ...

No sky replacement. As anyone who lives in Sydney can attest, last week was a very cloudy one :(

I suppose the only downside of going handheld was having to bump up the ISO to obtain a suitable shutter speed [I wanted to keep it @ f/11]. They reckon the HDR process does introduce noise due to the processing so the lower the ISO used, the better.

Still, it turned out all right ...

cheers,
J&D

First off, I really like this photo the grey clouds really make the color of the museum pop.

Second a newbie question what does HDR stand for and what does the process consist of?

Again Great Capture

lennyp06,

Thanks for your comments ...

I could write a whole lot about HDR photography but honestly, just Google it! [I'm certainly no expert, that's for sure!]

In fact, start by using the search function right here at POTN. :D

Just a tip though if you do start taking a lot of multiple exposures with your 40D ...

Make all the settings required [you'll know them once you start reading up on the subject] on the 40D then save them as one of your custom functions.

It's great being able to turn a dial and have the camera set up perfectly for a possible HDR photo opportunity!

One thing that I'm really working on is perfecting the merging of the 3 exposures [I find 3 is enough] with out the tonemapping [which gives it that surreal look]

Here's one I tried on the weekend ...

It was 3 exposures merged & post proceesed using Photoshop with no "tonemapping". Outside looks a little "processed" but I reckon I got away with it. If I took a single exposure, you just wouldn't see so much detail throughout the whole image ...

Beautiful picture, I'm trying to break into the HDR scene as well.
What a wonderfully moody sky...the buildings not bad either ;)
