If I can guess, the main difference is that #3 was probably shot at close range with a much wider angle lens than the others. This wider view is why the sky appears in the shot. This wider view is why the sky appears in the shot. Most of the time we shoot sports we are far away using long telephoto lenses. We fill the field with the atheletes and the very narrow AOV means the background does not include sky. Did you stage #3? Or did the play just develop before you and you had a wide enough lens on the camera? I ususally shoot field sports with a 300mm or 420mm prime so I sit and watch anything happening right in front of me. It was shot with the same lens. 100-400. Just happened that I was laying down and that corner kick that was right near me. It was part of the game.
