Does anyone use this side arm from Manfrotto/Bogen for mounting a camera in a manner similar to a 055 or 190PROB? I wanted to use it for macro work, with a head mounted on it, attached to a tripod.

Have not used the 3059, but I have a similar 3153 (double head support).

What kind of macro shooting are you trying to do, that you are considering the 3059?

Just fungi, bugs and such Wilt. I just bought a cheap tripod, which I am happy with, but the centre column only reverses so you can suspend the camera upside down. The whole package, head and legs, was $100- and it's pretty solid. I'm just trying to duplicate the flexibility I would have had if I'd have bought the Manfrotto/Bogen legs.

The 3153 would make more sense. Thanks!

Yes, I've used it quite a lot for forensic photography. It's substantial and works well, but I used it on a Bogen 475 tripod, which is more of a studio tripod. Hanging 6-10 lbs off of one end at full extension can topple things over if you don't have something to hold it down.

I still use it from time to time.

I'd be using it with a 30D and a 100/2.8 JB- thanks for the info!
