Antiquated is the incorrect word to use. But for a professional or semi professional camera, I would expect features such as:
- different image formats, JPEG and RAW are nice but what about other formats like sRAW?
- More Pixels per its LCD screen than the 230,00 it already has. Nikon has more pixels (I forget the actual count) it makes the display look like a MacIntosh monitor.
- DIGIC III To pump more RAW images and to focus faster especially when engaged in sports or action photography.
- Frames Per second should at least equal the 40D. 3FPS is a joke.
- More AF points. Nikon D300 has 51 which is totally customisable. 5D has only 9 but 6 supplemental.
Do not get me wrong. The 5D takes some stunning pictures better than the Nikon D300 especially when mounted with a L series lens and I can not complain because I only have a 30D with stock lens 28mm-135mm and would love to purchase the 5D BUT when I purchased the 30D, six to 8 months later the 40D came out, I will not make that mistake again.
I have no use whatsoever for sRAW, I want the maximum information my camera can record so would never use it.
LCD gives me all the data I require, the Nikons may have a better looking one but it doesn't improve the pictures being taken so that means nothing to me.
DIGIC III would be nice but DIGIC II gets the job done just fine. I haven't found anything that the AF can't keep up with that DIGIC III could do better. The 5D tracks falcons diving at 100mph+ which is a pretty good test.
OK, yes, I would like more FPS for certain subjects but in the main 3 FPS is plenty as I usually shoot one frame at a time and judge the moment. On those odd occasions where more FPS is necessary I can use my old 20D.
More AF points would be nice but, again, I am very happy with the current AF system. It gets the job done.
An interesting list of features you put together there, but nothing that actually improves the picture quality. I accept that the next 5D will be a better camera, but I wouldn't be prepared to pay the big difference in price between it and the current 5D for all those new features and (maybe) a tiny incremental improvement in IQ. If I didn't already have a 5D, I would be more than happy to go out and buy the current one tomorrow even if I knew that a new one was just a few weeks away.
The fact that it is still selling very well, despite being about the oldest DSLR in current production, tells us that there are still plenty of people out there who choose a camera based on the quality of the results, rather than which has the latest toys. Anybody buying it today is well aware that a new one is probably not far away, but I doubt when it comes they will be banging their heads saying "damn, if I'd waited I could have had sRAW and a fancier LCD".
The most gizmos doesn't always add up to the best camera.
