And finally you have nailed it. If I can get 1D AF system in a 5D I would die and go to heaven. This is why I think the Nikon D3 (not the D300) is a great camera. The question remains if Canon will ever be willing to put 1D level AF in a high end prosumer like the 5D.

d3 is a competitor (on some abstract level) to the 1dsmkii (or perhaps 1ds), why would you consider a 5d with pro level focusing but not the 1dsmkii that is a pro camera?
and the d3 focusing system is way overrated... the mkiii puts it to shame in every test i've seen, even on a hot day with bright lights.

that said, a 5d's AF is underrated, i find it to be quick and accurate even in some bad conditions

The 5D AF is pretty good, but it's no 1D.

The D300 is an $1800 camera, and it has an AF system that is pretty close to Nikon pro bodies.

So all I'm saying is that if Canon wanted to drop a 1D focus system into a 5D and charge something like $2500 I would be all ears.

Aside from price (which is not an insurmountable obstacle to me) the main reason I do not have a 1Dmk3 is because the grip is not detachable. I'm a hobbiest with too much money and I find the 5D is the absolute limit for the size of a camera I'm willing to carry. The 1D bodies are simply too darn big.

while i do agree with all the logic you threw out before this quoted statement, i don't feel any of it applies to it (the above quote).

If the D700 specs are correct (and they appear to be), Canon isn't going to have much choice in the matter.

if you look at the d3 and the d300 the d3 is just a bigger sturdier FF version of the d300 that can take 2 cf cards, and the d300 doesnt seem to hurt d3 sales, i think canon can get away with giving us meger popers that arent lucky enought to have the ability to go into huge debt to get a 4000 dollar camera, a few 1 series features.

OMG! you mean the 5D i just bough less then a week ago for the price i paid for the 20D 3years ago is already antiquated and I'll be scammed dry when they launch the 5D2 in a month or two ? :D
Well I suppose there's just no other way but to keeping up with the Jones if you spend more time reading reviews then taking pictures.
I'd prefer if Canon answered the D700 with a no-nonsense robust performer for less $$$. I'm not to keen on paying premium for useless bells and whistles.
Make the 5D2 run circles around the D3/D700 ISO-wise (shouldn't be too hard http://forums.dpreview.com …rum=1032&message=26063873 (external link) ), slap in some 21 AF points (cross and double-cross type), live preview for those awkward angle and macro shots, weather seals and a more durable 150K shutter, keep the price 500-700 lower then the D700. Oh and feel free to keep out all the useless bells and whistles that just clutter the menus and operation. keep it simple. That should be enough to kill Nikon's excitement.

reason? because canon already has the 1dsmkii. d300 is more like a 40d with a 1d focusing system. 5d will not have a 1d system, canon has always made new systems for every actual upgrade of all lines except the rebel series (5d has assist points, 40d had new system, 20d had new system, 1d lines have their own system, only one that doesn't fit in is the 30d with it's lack of actual improvement on the 20d). we'll definately see a new system on the replacement to a 5d (if one does show up), but it isn't going to be exactly a 1d af (likely 40d one with more assist points).

I look at it this way...if my house was to catch on fire...which body would I be forever grateful...I had on my person instead of left at home. And taking into consideration all the cababilites of the bodies and how much I use them and the photos it produces when I am not at fault for bad technique.

I would jump into the fire to get my 5D out.

Lotsa stuff, running outta room and a wife...I keep looking at her and wondering???
