I am looking to to something similar on another thread

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=564988

and I was pointed here.

Quick question, I am in the UK, and over here I haven't heard the abreviation SLA, I presume it refers to a lead acid battery - is that correct?

Hi all, just like to clarify something, I refer to the below picture, it is labelled incorrectly, the one that's labelled positive is actually negative, power this device up like that and you'll most likely have fireworks, someone else posted about too much current will fry this unit, wrong, the unit will only draw the current it needs, it's not the same as voltage, you can't "over current" something, if there's lots of current available, and you short out things, all it means is that there's more current to melt things, but if nothing is shorted, you could have I million amps and nothing will happen, the unit is designed to run off 12 volts, as someone already said, the unit was probably powered with reverse polarity, that's what caused the damage, 8 times 1.5 volts is 12 volts, like most new batteries, they aren't on 1.5 volts, but rather more like 1.6 volts, and that totals 12.8 volts.
