I don't think you're supposed to be able to stick your finger inside the lens and feel around in there.

This is 17mm on a 5D. It looks like this all the way up to about 26mm or so. :(

umm i think when you zoom that is the internal zoom going on try going to 40 or 17 and see if the rear element looks normal :)

If those black lines in the 2nd shot aren't something blocking the way, then you obviously have something wrong with the camera or lens.

Yes, the rear element on a 17-40L does move forward into the lens body like that when it zooms. It should be all the way in at 40mm and all the way back at 17mm. If it isn't moving back as you turn the zoom ring then the zoom mechanism is broken. In your photo you have it zoomed to 40mm and that looks normal for that position.

pepperoni,
Your first photo looks correct for the 17-40 f/4L
However your second photo doesn't look correct when using a 5D with it (mine never gave those black diagonal with my 5D).

The second photo looks like you have a hood attached to the lens, but not rotated to the locked position, thus some strange viginetting.

Wait a minute... Isn't there supposed to be a fixed rear glass element on the back of the lens? Is it normal to be able to stick your finger inside the lens?
I just got it back from Canon and their service notes read:
"Lens was inspected and tested. Interior of lens is normal, no missing parts. Normal amount of dark areas (in corners) when used at wide angles with body w/full frame sensor"

So, is it the lens or my camera? Can someone take a look at your 17-40 with it at 40mm and see if it looks like mine?
:(

Pepperoni, the rear element of the lens is apparently supposed to move. Your lens is fine.

People are concerned about the black bars in the sample image, though. Was something physically in the way of the camera? If not, there is a serious problem with your camera or lens that is unrelated to the normal operation of the lens retracting into the lens body.

Seams weird that the shutter would be like that if the camera was held level.....

Looks like aperture blades to me....

I haven't got mine to look at but the back does move in and out as you zoom from what I can remember. Other responses have also already verified as much.

At the same time, if it were a shutter causing those shadows they wouldn't be angled, and they should have sharper edges. Are you sure you don't have the wrong hood on the lens, crooked, or some sort of filter holder?

Can you test it again?
