Thanks. I've had the lens for just about a year and I could swear there's supposed to be a fixed piece of glass back there (just like every other zoom lens I have). I use the standard hood that comes with the 17-40. I don't have the camera with me today.

Yeah, try zooming to 17mm, and if you can still stick your finger in then, you have a problem (with the lens) and also what is with the black bars, try shooting with just the lens, no hood or anything, a pic of something

Take some test shots with your lens hood at various angles. I'm guessing the hood was on crooked (been there done that) or even the wrong hood was used if you have another that fits (ie the hoods from my 17-40 and 24-105 are interchangeable in mount but would not be such a wise thing to do).

That really looks like the hood to me. I hope you didn't pay Canon to tell you that your lens is ok. :D

Process of elimination...

Try the same camera with a different lens, maybe of the same focal length and see if you have the same problem.

Try the same lens with a different camera, and see if you have the same problem.

Shoot in Av mode to confirm it isn’t aperture blades…

If it is the hood… take it on and off while testing.

Another vote for a hood used incorrectly...

I should've brought the camera with me today. It'll have to wait until tonight to test it. If it's the hood, I'll be the epic dumbass for the day.

In the meantime, for those of you playing at home, feel free to twist the hood around and see if you're able to see it through the viewfinder at 17mm.

Until the OP answers that question, actual information given is pointless. Either he posted a poor example of a picture that has nothing to do with what he is asking, or its a large and relevant part of a large problem. His lack of answering makes me wonder if the multiple requests are being ignored for a reason.

WTF? Are you kidding me? I've already written twice that I don't have my camera today so I can't test with it.
As for the black areas of the image, I don't know. A few people seem to think it's the hood.

Looks like Bill posted a picture with a similar issue. Hey Bill... was your hood on crooked?

Not kidding in the least, nor am I giving you a hard time, which is why people kept asking you the same question.

Your reply of "I don't know" is all that was needed. By avoiding the question, you presented additional issues that not having it with you didn't change.

Thankyou for the reply.
