Yeah, try zooming to 17mm, and if you can still stick your finger in then, you have a problem (with the lens) and also what is with the black bars, try shooting with just the lens, no hood or anything, a pic of something

My lens is the same when I zoom to 17mm. The rear element goes in about 3/4", it looks identical to the first picture posted. My lens takes pictures just fine. Not a thing wrong with it. It is the way the lens is made. Let's not go saying things are wrong when they really aren't.

It's easy to accidentally knock that EW-83E out of alignment. This is just one of the reasons that I've switched to a modified, EW-83DII.

Here's a quick grab shot with EW-83E on crooked;

Looks the same to me.

Edit: you know I've done this many times. Now that I have a 5D and can look in the preview and see the problem right away. The first thing I would check is the hood.

All of these photos with the diagonal black bars are from incorrect use of the hood. Make sure you have it on right next time.

Wow.. Looking at that image, I bet that was it. I never considered the hood as the issue until today. Live and learn.

The second photo looks like you have a hood attached to the lens, but not rotated to the locked position, thus some strange viginetting.

That was my first thought! We can likely file this one away as one of those things that happens to someone else. Of course most of use probably have some little gem that we would just as soon forget about.

Out of curiosity, how is it possible that having the hood on wrong could lead to such black portions?

Most lenses that cover the wider end have hoods shaped like flower petals. The shorter petals are designed to go to the side, while the longer petals go over the top and bottom of the lens. If you don't fit the hood correctly, the longer petal goes across the side, interfering with the image.

Oh, I see. Because the sensor is wider than it is tall.

The hoods on the EF lenes are optimized for 24mm X 36mm frame at the wide focal length. If you turn the hood out of normal then you'll start to get vignetting in the 36mm dimension on the wide end. I could have done the same at 40mm and the vignetting would be none at all.

Try it with the hood on your 18-55.

Don't have a hood, but I was thinking of getting one for the 55-250. Bit offtopic though.
