I converted a picture of the grand canyon into greyscale using Paintshop Pro 9.0.

If you notice, you'll see strange vertical lines in the sky at the top of the frame.

These lines were not in the original color version, but show up in greyscale.

What are these and how can I make them go away?

Only thing I can think of is that there may be some color there (perhaps from diffesed rays of sunlight or something). Have you tried playing with the grey scale mix contolls to see what color is there and then adjusting the mix to minimize the lines?

What you have there is banding. Not enough shades of gray to display a smooth gradient. Happens in 8 bit, but it could also be because most LCDs are 6 bit plus dithering. They wont show in print. Especially if you print 16 bit.

Thanks for the info guys. I was able to use a better process (PS CS2 RAW converter coupled with manipulation of the TIFF with full bit depth) to get a cleaner version that not only preserves detail, but also gets rid of those bands!

What do you guys think now?

That is a really great shot and even better B&W conversion. Care to share what you did?

#1 has a slight greenish tinge to it, and looks far too contrasty. #2 is a much better job :) Lovely shot. I'd also like to know the b/w conversion process.

Very good shot. It seems like every time I get to the Grand Canyon, nothing but blue skies. I love the clouds and shadows.

I actually really prefer the contrasty version. Either one though is an awesome picture!

Yeah, same problem, but I lucked out in that it was crappy weather when I was there. But crappy weather many times equals great light! I only wish I had more time to photograph that day. We were there for like only two hours. And it was too cold for me to set up my tripod and shoot. This photo was shot handheld and taken with me leaning over the lookout point.

#2 is exquisite. Really Ansel Adams-esque. And it's not every day you say that :)
