How would everyone feel about an "extreme sports" sub category for:

Skateboarding
BMX
Mt Biking
wake/kite boarding
snowboarding
scooters <--- as corny as they are
rollerblades
.... and so on

anyone else feel it might be needed?

Yeah, I agree too, just to differenciate. It isn't needed per se, but it would be nice to have.

cool idea but it simply ain't gonna happen. suggestions like these have been raised many times on this forum as well as others here (even tried in some). eventually it always blew up and usually just creates a lot of flack and division in the process of discussion.

really??... you would think the "team sports" people would be sick of seeing another punk kid on a skateboard, as much as the extreme people would be bored seeing another little leaguer swinging a bat....

I do believe your right it wont happen but if it did would it really cause a problem??

not in my mind it wouldn't. Being a team sports and extreme sports guy (both behind the camera and in actuality) I see both sides. It's not about the genre though, its about the basic premise of the boards that we all learn from others and often it takes someone outside our specific genre to bring a new and unique concept to our actual sport. The other argument is that things like lighting should be universally applicable be it a wedding or dj's. To a large degree this does hold true. Bottom line, it limits the amount of info anyone is likely to see if we splinter into a thousand subgroups so its better to just keep things together and let users decide if they wish to participate in a thread or not. Does that make sense?

So how then did "Motorsports" get their own category? I'd support this as I am sure there are a huge group of skater/blader/scooter/bmx photogs out there who would prefer to go directly to their own forum, instead of having to wade through all our baseball, football, hockey, cricket...etc. posts. Same way that there are many who shoot "traditional" sports who could care less about some dude's "radical flipside ollie with a 720 twist" image of the week (my apologies for any terminology errors!). I think that the "genre" is big enough that it could support its own group. Personally I enjoy seeing some really neat shots of guys hanging in mid air and the like, but why not give them their own spot?

Christian, I'm not being a D-bag in suggesting you search on something related to breaking out forums and look at the history. Trust me when I say this horse has been dead for a very very long time. Even more, it has caused quite a bit of controversy between members and even member and mods. Given the long history that you may or may not have experienced here, it's simply not worth engaging in a debate over since it will only lead to frustration in the end. Trust me on this, I've watched it here. I'd love to have a spot for extreme sports and they exist on places like bmx-forum, mtbr, hcor, and many others just like them. Again, I'm not expressing my opinion in this as much as I'm simply trying to save you the frustration of fighting a battle that can't be won be can certainly end poorly. Hope you can see my comments as simply trying being helpful to a fellow photog and "extremist". Peace brutha. :D
