To Alewife From Park Street

I took this picture while waiting for my train at Park Street Station in Boston. First time I've tried ISO 3200 and I did a little bit of post processing. I'm not familiar with techniques to reduce noise. I see the purple fringing around the lights, but I kind of like it. Taken with a 50/1.4. I'd like to know what people think. Thanks!

I really like the image, noise and all. I'd crop off the left side and some of the bottom to emphasize all the curves made by the tunnel walls, lights and the track. It also might be nice to have more height of the tunnel showing.

If you have PSCS3 there is some good noise reduction stuff inorporated in Adobe Camera RAW - so, perhaps it's time to start considering shooting in RAW. There used to be a couple of different free noise programs that were very effective. Can't remember the names, but I think Noise Ninja has a free version.

The image in the tunnel does not look as sharp as I would have expected. 1/80" looks fast enough for that focal length, so maybe you were not using the hyperfocal distance to best advantage.

First, assuming that you are not familiar with Hyperfocal Distance:

Once you understand it, set your focus point manually as best you can so that the entire range of distances that you want to keep in focus is covered.

Generally, this will mean that you will focus at a much closer distance than would be the case if you just let the camera autofocus. By taking advantage of your understanding of Hyperfocal distance the closer elements of the scene will be more in focus than they would have been, while still not noticeably affecting those elements that are approaching infinity.
