I don't think it's horrible....but it does look like his face is OOF. I'd like it better too if he were smiling. Keep up the good work!!!

nice shots!
I like the expressions of the kids in both pictures.
they seem wise beyond their years :)

a couple of points:
First picture is definitely out of focus. If you look close you'll notice that the tree is slightly sharper than the boy's face, which means that your focus point was even before that.
You could always use software to sharpen the image a bit.

Also I would cut a little bit of the top of the image because there's not much there.
