The Canon site doesn't list the EOS 1N as compatible w/ this flash unit.
Has anyone tried this combination?
I don't want to mess up either the body, nor the flash gun.

From Canon 580EX II site:
Compatible Cameras
E-TTL operation with all EOS digital SLRs; PowerShot G2, G3, G5, G6, and Pro1; and the following EOS film cameras - EOS-1v, EOS-3, Elan 7N series, Elan 7 series, Elan II series, Rebel T2, Ti, K2, GII, G.
TTL operation with all other 35mm EOS SLRs, and Canon T90.

5DMkII, 40D w/ grip, lenses, flashes, more stuff.

You should be able to set the 580EX II to TTL mode (vs ETTL mode) and have it work with the EOS 1N without a problem. You set the 580EX II to TTL via the custom function (C.Fn-05 = 1).
