I got permission to shoot from the parking ramp today. It was completely full on the top level, had to squeeze into a corner, where the view wasn't that great. I've got an idea for a different spot later this week.

It's fun just being around the jets and listening to the engines.

Not a good angle, and my panning needs LOTS of work

This plane sat there the whole time, about 90 minutes

Cool shots, now how in hell did you get the ok to shoot from such a public spot within the airport? Here at JFK NY, you'd be under some heavy questioning within 2 minutes....

I called the airport director's office. No permit is needed unless it's a commercial shoot. The only requirement is that I call on the day I want to shoot, and my contact sends an email to security advising them I'll be up on the ramp.

I was a little worried, though. As I pulled into the airport, the information sign was flashing 'Threat Level - Orange' and 'Suspicious Activity - Call 9-1-1', then when I got up to the top level of the ramp and got setup, I felt like everyone at the airport could see me, and surely I would be questioned.

There was very little activity where I was. I did flag down someone looking for a parking spot to take the first picture above.

Nice! And they didn't question you as to the reason you wanted to take pictures? :)

They did. I said photography was my hobby and I liked jets, and the photos were for personal use.

You're lucky you get that kind of access up there. I have been moved on by the Police a couple of times around ATL, seems that they are totally paranoid, quoting 9/11 etc. Like you I like photography and especially aircraft photography.

A little more C&C if I may. Again, nice clear shots, but it spoils the shots IMO to see the tail cut off in your flying/landing shots.
