Card reader, I open up the CF card in Windows Explorer, open up the folder where they are going, and drag and drop Move. After that, I put the now-empty card back in the camera. Fast and painless.

You can't say that and not give out the specs, (well, you can if you want)

Go on, share :)

I shoot wireless in studio.:) By the time I walk from the studio to a computer, my files are there. I shoot to a 16GB CF as a backup and just format it every couple weeks. I use a card reader otherwise.

Don't have a Mac.

I always format in camera though, I was just wondering if a it's a few seconds or holy sh%t that's fast, type of difference with a card reader.

An extra few seconds would not swing it for me.

Steve

Here (external link) is a speed test. A Sandisk Ultra2 will do about 11MB/s in a card reader...
So if I calculate correctly, it will save you a minute... And that's because the card is not too fast...

I have just finished a designing a new system. Final testing was just completed, and it is now fully operational.

Using a cray supercomputer and three hackers who have worked round the clock for $20 in gamestop giftcards and an unlimited supply of hot pockets, I have designed a system that allows me to shoot directly from my camera into the mainframe of every major publication in the world.

The system is totally awesome. Snap a picture of my son going potty in the kiddy pool, select "Time" and on the cover it goes. Grab a quick cap of two guys smoking weed in an alley? It shows up in the lead of the Catholic Digest.

The power is mine. Now, how to use it.........

(Those who think they can compete with the sheer awesomeness of my system or the quirkiness of my imagination -- bring it on! :))

This space for rent.

Thanks RD

I would have had a little trouble finding this out if you only posted the link, so thanks for your time and calculation.

So, if I get faster cards, I could save a little time on my download time, and if we are talking sub 1 min difference, I don't see the need for a CR.

Thanks.

Steve

I use the built in card readers in my PC simply because since upgrading to Vista its much more reliable. I was getting failed transfers using EOS utility and just stopped using it.

card in slot, rightclickstart, open file on hard drive, open file on card reader, right click move command, beans in grinder, water in coffee brewer, coffee in paper filter, turn on machine, back to computer and open photo files in zoomviewer, setup slideshow, preview shots, pull out now empty card and replace in camera, back to brewer and pour a cup, back to computer and begin post process, repeat. now you know how I do it, any suggestions or critiques? I am always looking for a better method, thats why I am here.

I have an Epson P-3000 and always download my CF cards directly into the P-3000 and then back that up to my computer.

I use ImageIngester (external link).

So here's what I do:

  • Insert card into CF reader.
  • Image ingester pops up. I fill in the relevant details (file name, folder name, what iptc set to use)
  • Start ingestion.
  • Folder opens in iView.
  • I can remove the card from the reader & start working.

Something that's important to note: not all card readers are equal! Not all USB ports are equal!

There is a substantial difference between the speed of a USB 1.0 speed and a USB 2.0 speed. If your computer has USB 2.0 ports, ensure that your card reader and connections allow full USB 2.0 transfers.

A USB 2.0 reader can have speeds that are similar to the original firewire speeds (but not the more recent firewire release) but can be brought down to USB 1.0 speeds if a USB 1.0 device is connected to the port by either using an unpowered USB 2.0 hub or a USB 1.0 hub. Plus, the 30D and all but the most recent cameras are USB 1.0 devices, so they will be slower in any case than using a USB 2.0 card reader.

If you're just downloading a few images, no big deal. But for those of us who shoot gigabytes of images over a session, speed matters!

P.S. -- I on occasion use an Epson P5000 when I know I'll be exceeding two cards of shots and it's great for that, especially the great LCD for viewing, but it's slow, as in USB 1.0 speed, which means I leave one 8GB card downloading while I'm out shooting with the other...

The big advantage with card readers is that you can have more than one...

1. Card in slot in Dell monitor.
2. Card in slot in Sandisk reader.
3. Open Lightroom.
4. Lightroom import. Pick one card.
5. Set metadata, choose 1:1 Previews.
6. Lightroom import. Pick other card.
7. Set metadata, choose 1:1 Previews.

Hey presto, 8GB of images on their way to the LR catalogue. And nap (or POTN) time for me.
