Just recieved my 100-400 but the hood was attached directly to the lens, inverted. I could swear that normall they come in their own spearate bag to avoid damage? If it is sharp I keep it but I have a feeling this has been out of the box...

I'm pretty sure mine came packed seperately. Just get shooting, Neil! :) Only way to find out!

I'm sure you'll tell us if it's a good copy!

... and you'll DEFINITELY tell us if it's a bad one!

I got my 100-400 from B&H a few weeks ago, and I'm pretty sure it came with the lens with the hood reversed and stored in the carry case. There was plastic wrap around the lens/hood, but I'm pretty sure it came "hooded" :) Otherwise, the outer box would have to be quite a bit bigger.
Enjoy the new lens!

As far as I remember, it comes with the hood on reversed inside the canvas bag.

Come to think of it, most L lenses are like this - my 85L and 135L came hood attached and reversed as well.

Same here. Otherwise, it will occupy more space than i would like to carry.

Agreed, got mine from B&H as well and I know the hood was reversed. If it was inside a plastic wrap I can't remember, but that would make sense.

mine came separate wrapped in plastic . It was positioned in the box so that it sat on the lens invereted, but was covered in plastic and not physically attached to the lens.

Thats what i thought, seems to be two methods of wrapping...

Will try it as soon as I get home, no worries on that score ;)

Cheers guys.

The 100-400 IS comes inside its own plastic wrap. The lens also comes in its own plastic wrap. The hood is reversed mounted onto the lens (of course not screwed on, merely placed over it), and both are shoved inside the carry bag. So it should not be "screwed" onto the lens. They are each individually bagged.

The important question is, can you really screw with a bayonet?

My concern is that this lens has been out of the box. If it has then there is a chance it was used, tested or sent back by someone....thats all. and it was attached to the lens...

and that is a very good concern. I would feel the same way.. You spend good money on a lens and you want to feel secure that this thing is BRAND NEW IN PACKAGING. After all that's what you paid for. If there is evidence that maybe someone else tried it, it does make you wonder if maybe it was returned, refurbished, or "rented briefly" If it shoots fine and has not flaws no big deal. You'll forget all about it in a coupe days. I do understand where you are coming from.. I am very anal about that too.
