While the lightbox is good, who uses strobe lighting like AB for lighting food, small items, glasses, etc? What did you use before and why/are you glad that you changed?

I are confused.

The only AB I can think of is Alien Bees. They're strobes, not continuous. I've used strobes with no light box for product photography before.

One speed light with shoot through umbrella at the object, one speed light bounced off the ceiling to help with the shadows:

I'm not exactly sure of the answer you are after, but....

I use strobes with softboxes, without, grids, snoots, shoot through rippled glass, through plants, whatever. I bounce it off mirrors, walls, alum foil, steel plates. I use hot lights, fluorescent's, HMI, halogen, tungsten, work lights, spots, fresnels.

Basically, whatever works, whatever lends interested textures, light qualities, or manipulates the light in a visually interesting way. They all have different qualities and properties worth exploring.

Here is a strobe with reflector, and a softbox

Reflector in front, grid with gel in the back.

Reflectors and snoots in order to bring out the textures.

A softbox for overall lighting, and a strobe with a reflector for the highlights
