I don't see where this would be a large improvment.

The whole purpose of a bracket is to keep the flash "above" the "axis" of the lens.

This reduces the disatance and get's it off axis.

Sure it could be fun on ocasion, But looks more gimmicky than funtional to me.

its no gimmick... just add a gary fong and its golden!

Seriously I would love to see the results... I hate flash brackets.

If it's just a little better than a conventional tilting flash (I like the broader range of angular movement for bounce control) then it might be the right replacement for my 550EX when it gives up the ghost if Canon makes one like it. I don't use flash a whole lot though but that does some things I think look kind of handy.

Agree 100%. I can get essentially that effect with my Canon flashes since they have two axes of rotation, and they'll be further away from my lens. But if I'm doing much flash work at all, I'll be using a bracket.

All the bounce angles of this sony can be done with the 580.

The direct flash positions put it closer to the lens, which is useless really unless you like redeye. I suppose it could reduce side shadow on portrait oriented shots, but really, how many pros actually use direct on camera flash as a main light source?

I don't think the 580II needs improvement in the swivel department. Now the auto thyristor mode, that's a different story.

Looks good, but for a suggested retail of $500., I'm good too, I'll just muddle through with what I've got.

Looks faster to reposition to certain angles than my 550, but I haven't used a 580. Guess I'll find out once my 550 decides to finally burst in to flames!

I can see that it would not replace a bracket. If one wants to get the flash off the lens axis. But for those like me that use bounce with on camera flash it would be nice to rotate and use the built in bounce card in the vertical.

I'm not crazy about the grip, but I do like that AF/MF button. That would be handy (on the body and on the grip).

Yes, but If you just want to bounce with flash on camera, then it would be nice to rotate the head and use the built in bounce card. I do the same right now by rotating the 580EX head. But I have to provide my own bounce card. With the Canon you have to move the bounce card from the top to the side of the head as you change orientation. It would be so simple to implement this on a 580EX III.

It is a bit bulky though.

You know, the more I think about it, all I really want is a second pull out bounce card on my 580EX II. Same card as the one on the top plus one on the right side. Then when in vertical mode I would just rotate the head at the angle I want and pull out the card. I may get one of those small Demb flip-its or something. But before that I'll test out a small white card with a little Velcro.
