I am looking to add a monopod to my gear

I am looking at the Canon 100 or the Bogen 676B

Bogen

Canon

Which would be a better budget monopod? I don't shoot often so it won't be heavily used... mainly purchasing for my honeymoon next year.

I'd say the bogen is probably the better monopod, but the canon does have a built in ballhead.

Look for load capacity. Make sure it will hold the stuff you're planning on putting on, and make sure the full height of the monopod won't leave you bending down too much

I have THIS (external link) guy and absolutely LOVE it!

Though, there have been times when I wish I had a ball head on it, since I didn't have the room to angle the monopod. I'd say get one of the bogens, and save for a ball head :)

You might want to consider the Manfrotto 679, 680 or 681. These pods provide a bit more support and are inexpensive.

That is the best way to determine which one to buy. Think about growth as you may add heavier bodies/lens in the future. Spend once not twice.

I have the 680 and it works well, unless I add a 500mm to my 40D.

The biggest lens I may get is prob the 70-300. My fiance probably won't let me get anything larger

Have you looked at Feisol? You might want to consider a CM-1401 carbon fiber mono - super light, sturdy, secure twist locks and a decent monopod bag, and priced like aluminum. I ordered through feisol.net with no problems at all.

I use either a ball head (Feisol CB-30C, not recommended because you have to crank down the locks so hard it hurts your fingers and even then it can only handle very light loads) or a Manfrotto 3229 swivel tilt head with quick release. The CB-30C/3229 combination handles a 300 f/2.8L / 40D / grip with ease.

I don't know if this is a problem with other monopods, but the Feisol seems immune to dust somehow ... even at a baseball field when all of my other equipment seems to finish the day caked with tiny bits of the infield, the mono says clean.

Ball heads for monopods???

I don't like the idea of a ball head on a monopod. I use the Kirk Enterprises MPA-1 tilt head which is a Manfrotto 3232 with a Kirk Arca swiss Compatible quick release.

IMO, the Arca Compatible release is great because it can accommodate the Really Right Stuff L-Bracket. The RRS bracket is ideal for mounting a camera on either a tripod or a monopod (especially when using a non tripod ring equipped lens) because the camera is kept directly over the shaft of the monopod or the head of the tripod when in a portrait (vertical) position.

http://reallyrightstuff.com/QR/05.html (external link)

With a standard ball head and a non-Arca Swiss Q.R., the camera is cantilevered over to the side of the ball when in the portrait position. This makes the set-up unstable and also makes it difficult to shoot a correct pano since the camera is not ratating properly. Again, IMO, shooting panos with the camera in the portrait position is the absolute best way since a longer focal length lens can gain the same top to bottom coverage as a wider lens shot in the landscape mode. The left to right coverage is simply predicated upon how many exposures you are wiling to stitch together.

Isn't the Kirk oriented wrong for use with an L bracket? (tilts up down with lenses, would tilt left to right with camera?)
