In August, I'll be getting a 5D (I'll order it sooner, but that's when I'll be back in the US to pick it up). I plan to get at least another lens along with it. I already have the 24-105L. Right now I'm using a 350D. I already want more reach with some of the landscapes I shoot. But I also want to go wider than the kit lens. So I'm trying to decide wider vs. longer. I'm leaning towards longer as I'll still have the 18-55, which should be a good bit wider on the FF body. I know the image quality won't be so great, but it's still better than nothing. I don't even use it that often now. So I figure I will use it even less on the FF body.
If I were to get a wide angle, it'd either be the 17-40L, or the 16-35L. For the longer range, I'm thinking the 70-200 F4L IS USM, or the 100-400 F4.5-5.6L IS USM. I prefer to shoot handheld, and would plan on carrying all 3 lenses at a time (for travel photography). I like that the 70-200 is much lighter than the 100-400, but I'm not sure it'll be quite enough reach for me. When I had a 75-300 on the 350D, I never used it's full reach. So the 100-400 wouldn't be much use for me on the long end.
When I move back to the US, I'll shoot more automotive than travel. I'll also shoot the occasional airshow, boat race,... But as that'll be at least another year away, I'll probably add another lens or 2 before then.
Are there any other lenses in this quality / zoom range that I should consider instead? If I really want more reach, I could always put the lens on the 350D. But once I see the difference in quality, and get used to the 5D, I probably won't want to touch the 350D. Sorry for this being so long, and thanks for any ideas / suggestions.
