Hey, this is my first time posting pictures of my work. I've only had my XSi for less than two weeks, but haven't gotten much time to mess around with it because of finals.

Its my first DSLR, and I am fairly new to photography. Any comments are welcome. Thanks.

Oh, And they are all taken with the kit lens.

Fence in my backyard:

If shooting raw, the crop would be made on the raw file and the resulting crop, converted to jpeg, wouldn't show artifacts like that. You'd still convert to jpeg (or png) for the web, but you're converting the already-cropped raw.

If shooting jpeg, the image is already compressed, and when you crop you magnify the artifacts that naturally exist in any jpeg image.

Ahh, ok. I was trying to figure out whether the image would get the artifacts from converting the raw to jpeg. I guess it probably will a little, but at least it will be a lot less than shooting straight jpeg.

Thanks brett!

Hello everyone, really enjoying reading this thread. I ordered my 450d with kit lens yesterday and it arrived this afternoon (free postage at that). Unfortunately it is going to be my xmas present so I am not allowed to use it until the 25th. Not too long to wait. I also ordered a 55-250 lens but this is on back order due to the popularity of this lens. It was a toss up between this lens and the Sigma 70-300 APO. I finally made my mind up after a guy at work let me have a play with both on Sunday. It was the IS that swung It for me. It is a slightly less in the telephoto length but not by that much.
I will go out after xmas and get the duck shot that is needed to add to this thread.
Keep adding the pics which helps me with the waiting……..

Hi XSI fans

I was wondering if anyone has an opinion of how best to set the white balance for pictures taken under ceiling halogen low voltage lights.

From what I read from google searches I have read:

(a) Use incandesant

(b) Use auto white balance

Any options or articles to read would be great.

Thanks

Personally I use auto white balance, always. Just shoot in RAW, then go into DPP (Digtial Photo Professional, comes with the cam) and adjust it there to the different settings and ever use a custom white balance if you don't like any of the presets. Works for me, of course I'm lazy and a semi-noob, so I'm also looking to see what others say.

Hey all thought I would post a picture, nothing special just one of my cats..

Focal Length=53mm
Lens= EF-S 18-55 3.5-5.6 IS (KIT)
F/Stop=5.6
Flash Mode= Onboard Fired (actually I think that is what ruined the photo)
Shutter= .8
ISO= 200
AWB

I did a little PP, resized to 1024 x 758 and crunched it to be under 150k. Anyway -
