This was taken today with the 70-200 @ 200mm out of my foggy jeep window. It's not very sharp, but there's something about it that i dig:

no doubt, i have a 1.4x in the mail too. unfortunately the "partly cloudy" forecast for my neck of the woods has turned into another 4" of snow that i'm not takin' the 70-200 out in!

Why not, it's weather sealed?

I think both pics look great. Nate, try converting that photo into B&W just to see what it comes out looking like.

Also, I'm gonna be headed up to Michigan this coming Friday, so I wanted to pick your brains to see if anyone has any tips about shooting in snow or snowy conditions as far as exposure stuffs and all that (both on how to take care of the gear as well as how not to get an underexposed shot).

Yes I agree - it is Holiday cardish - I actually like the black at the top corners.

Oh and to backup a few posts, it was in the 20s so we went to the tree I snapped a couple of quickies but said - too cold... Had G/F with me and she was freeeeeezing.

And - that lens looks sexy on that camera!! Now I think for sure I will get one :)

whats everyone getting for xmas?

As far as camera gear - I asked for ...

1) Sigma 24-70 f2.8 Macro (was going to ask for the Canon 24-70L but after all the great reviews - I figured I would try it.
2) Canon 580ex II

Hope I get both - as long as Santa is too busy to check that list twice.

i've set my name through the eos utility program and my name doesn't come up on the exif data..
veiwed exif data in windows (right click properties, summary advanced) and there is no author name.
veiwed info in the original document thing and only model number and serial number come up.
viewed in photoshop cs and cs3 and neither show my name in exif data in file info.

Sunday December 21, 2008

Good morning, and Happy Holidays to all,

On the subject of what we are getting (or hope to get) for Christmas, may I suggest a gift we can give ourselves that is small, but, I think quite helpful.
If you are new to photography, or just new to the DSLR mode, join a local camera club. The dues are usually modest, and by and large the rewards are huge. Now, usually there are no classes for beginners, nor truly hands on assistance, but......here is the huge dividend: you get to see what others are doing, the good, the bad, and the ugly, and avoid all but the good in advance.
My own club, here in the New Orleans area, has competitions - print, digital media, and, yes, even slides for the film guys.
Entering your print in the competition is a fine way to get helpful criticism from the person judging the entries. In addition there are field trips to the usual and not so usual spots (we had a trip to a dairy farm).
A club may meet one or two nights a month, and, there are some meetings that are better than others, but, for me it was a wonderful way to supplement whatever I had learned on my own from reading instructional books or by my own trial and error.
So, after you have unwrapped that new "goodie" add a camera club membership to that subscription to Popular Photography, and, thereby add a dimension to your version of our extraordinary hobby.

Seasons Greetings..

Joe Tiemann - Reinheim

I tried looking for a photography group here in San Diego... But sadly I have found none that were dedicated in staying together

Another shot of my mom's kitten.

I know it's center-composed, but I liked the way the focal plane acted on the combination of the chair and kitten, giving him some context, and the similarity of his fur color to the wooden chair arm. For some reason, this and all the shots of him that day in the sun are badly over-exposed, but I was able to pull the RAW back to something half-acceptable. It's not great, I know, but I'm learning. :)

Well, I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it or not, but I sure do like the XSi. I'm still deciding on whether or not I'd rather have a second 40D and have all my accessories the same, or keep the XSi to use as a nice portable travel camera in addition to my 40D. Either way, this is a great camera! I had an XTi before this (still have it - trying to sell it on ebay) and it was good too, but there have definately been some improvements in the XSi - particularly in the ISO performance and the meter.

These are from the other day with the KIT lens - which is stellar btw. I have the 17-55 f/2.8 but I wanted to give this lens a workout to see how it did. I LOVE IT!!! I think it will be on my camera - at least this one - more than my 17-55 due to it's size and weight. Takes up less room in an overnight bag and performs quite well.

Take a look for yourself:

These were all shot on auto ISO (but I think it picked ISO 400) with the KIT lens (IS). The metering was excellent. I barely boosted exposure in LR2. I shot in Landscape mode picture style jpeg (lost the RAWS - long story) and bosted the vibrance up to 20 in LR2.

This one was shot at ISO 1600. You can see the lens barrel distortion at wide angle, but it still looks good.

Main Gear - Cameras: 40D, 450D, G10 Lenses: Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, Canon 70-200L f/4 IS USM, 35mm f/2, 50mm f/1.8
FOR SALE:XTi, grip, spare battery, kit lens.
