Andy (StetsonAw)

With the flash off center from the stroboframe quickflip it seems the shadows it will produce will look strange being off center with the shadows going to the left. What are your thoughts on this? It seems the top bar should have been longer so the flash would be centered over the lens.

Have you ever used flash before? As a general rule, the further you can get the flash away from the lens, the better. And you always have the option to bounce, it's not as though you're stuck shooting straight on to the left of the lens.

i did notice that on a few [flash fired straight forward] shots, but since i normally bounce, i really don't have that problem. that and i reduce as much shadows as i can when i shoot. not the most practical thing in the world for shooting vertical shots, but it can be fun.

The only flash I have used is the pop-up flash. I am saving up to get a hot shoe flash (probably the 580 EXII) I hope sometime in 2009.

My thoughts were with the flash being off center, especially with the flash not bouncing off the ceiling it would produce strange shadows going to the left with the stroboframe that Andy is now using.

the stroboframe has like 10 holes on the bottom, so that you can center it. like i said though, i just threw it on there and snapped a pic. i have it on right now, and there's not too much of a difference.

Hi Jill! Welcome to POTN! Sounds like you are well on your way to taking some fantastic photos. The only thing I didn't see in your list of equipment was a good flash, like the 430ex ll. Will make a world of difference in your low light photos! Anyways, good luck and happy shootin!:D

Thanks, CK. Yes, I have the 430ex on my list to buy next. That and a maco lens would be great.

Hey guys, been following the thread for quite some time now, really great work from many of you. Thought I'd finally add some of my own. All straight out of the camera with only some USM added.

Just a few random shots...

One that I liked with my tammy 28-75 2.8

Testing out a Sigma 70-300 APO between 200-300mm a little soft but decent.

And my reason for getting the XSi in the first place...

A couple from the very first set I took with the kit lens.

And the nifty fifty...

Hoping to add more to the thread in the future.

C&C always welcome and appreciated.

Well I've just got back from a quick walk around the park near my house. These are my first shots with my new 24-105mm L lens.

It's -4 and I couldn't find my gloves, so didn't get much chance for many shots before my fingers froze up! I'll need to have a good walkabout when it warms up a little (or when I find my gloves...) I did manage to get a duck shot though...but not a very exciting one.

All shots are pretty much straight off the camera except for a little cropping on the duck & swans.

Wanted to see what the colour reproduction was like as well.....I think I'm going to like this lens....

Like I say, not very exciting shots at all, but just my initial test shots with my replacement for the kit lens.

Hi,

ive bought 2 weeks ago a 450D Kit and it is my first DSLR. Ive discoverd that the AF of this camera is very bad, i made a picture of a wooden fence and in the background appears a house. I focused on the fence and in the next picture on the roof of the house and the camera couldnt focus on the roof. Always the fence is sharp but not the roof, a friend of mine bought a 1000D and the AF works and he is able to get a sharp roof. Both cameras in center AF, Av Mode,18mm,f3,5.

my mates 1000D couldnt focus the fence at near distance and on his pictures the roof is always sharp, so completely the opposite to mine :)

I switched to Live view and contrast AF and the result was very good, the roof was sharp. So i can say the AF with the viewfinder is very bad and live view AF is very good. Im not sure if i should send the new camera to repair, maybe this proplem is normal with 450D cameras.

AF in live view is ALOT slower, and wouldn't really be usable often in general conditions, so if your AF is broken i would consider returning it. But I think you should try again and find out if it is broken. Check the light etc aswell. I don't know how it can be bad one way, and good the other (in live view?).

because in Live View it is contrast based AF. I think it is maybe a construction failure of the 450D, ive tested another one with same proplem and i can found the same proplems in the internet as well. The light was perfect today

I think I must have a duff camera then because mine has never auto focused in live view! Am I missing something obvious??

Ignore my last comment - I have just re-read the user manual and it does have the AF function in live view....but not in the usual 'press the shutter button half way' (which is what I thought you meant)

What a complete fag.....pressing the * button and waiting for the focus! I haven't used the live view since buying the camera partly because I didn't think it had AF. Now that I know it has got it, I don't think I'll ever use it because it's so bloody awkward and slow!

Good ol' viewfinder for me every time.....:D
