Live view contrast AF works much better then fokusing over the view finder, most 450D have the front fokus problem when fokusing with view finder with 18mm, f3,4. Check it out with the focus test chart and you will see :) Canon solved the proplem with the 1000D, i bet it is a construction failure or very bad quality control?

I will send mine back but i have no hope cause there are ppl with 5 new 450D bodys and still the same thing , i should have bought 1000D or Nikon D60:o

Hi,

ive bought 2 weeks ago a 450D Kit and it is my first DSLR. Ive discoverd that the AF of this camera is very bad, i made a picture of a wooden fence and in the background appears a house. I focused on the fence and in the next picture on the roof of the house and the camera couldnt focus on the roof. Always the fence is sharp but not the roof, a friend of mine bought a 1000D and the AF works and he is able to get a sharp roof. Both cameras in center AF, Av Mode,18mm,f3,5.

my mates 1000D couldnt focus the fence at near distance and on his pictures the roof is always sharp, so completely the opposite to mine :)

I switched to Live view and contrast AF and the result was very good, the roof was sharp. So i can say the AF with the viewfinder is very bad and live view AF is very good. Im not sure if i should send the new camera to repair, maybe this proplem is normal with 450D cameras.

I'm still wringing my hands trying to decide whether to order my XSi or not, and you guys are scaring me. The AF looks like it's not reliable, or is it that too many people are using it wrong. I own a Canon G3, and I remember reading something about the AF needs a vertical line to focus on. So if your vertical near end fence is in focus, that's what the camera chose to focus on. Anything else in the picture is subject to the focal point at that point. (sharper in close and blurrier toward the horizon. I ask what you think because you already are using a XSi. I've also read other revues about the Live view AF being slow. How slow is slow? is it a deal breaker or something you can work with? Thanks for any input in advance. :)

I just ordered the XSi and 2 lens kit (18-55 and 55-250),
I'll let you know about the AF but if you read www.dpreview.com/forums (external link) there isn't a problem (unless you consider noobs just starting out)

I don't have any issues with autofocus, unless I'm trying to photograph animals through a fence as I did at the zoo today - it can be tricky to get the camera to focus on the animal instead of the fence, but I think that's a depth of field issue more than an autofocus issue. I do notice some softness & distortion at the extreme ranges of my 55-250 lens, but I understand that this is fairly common with the less expensive kit lenses, and less common/noticible in the higher-end L lenses that I can't afford just yet.

XSi w/18-55mm IS, 55-250mm IS
Adding soon: 50mm f1.8, some sort of flash unit

Nothing special, this (drunk) couple asked me to take their photo, ended up getting tipped 20 at the end. Very unexpected.

Anywho, slight contrast edit, and addition of border and such done through flickr.

What programs do you guys use to edit the pictures?

wow shadowman, incredible picture! You start looking at the fence in the distance and as you get to the foreground all the detail just pops out, very nice.

Good ol' viewfinder for me every time.....:D

You got to wonder about a brand new feature that is turned off by default...

i use the viewfinder sometimes when im shooting real low on the ground for car shots and its too hot to lay on the tarmac....

i have to say im impressed with the 17-40L, even on our crop bodies at 17mm it still feels pretty wide...

I went to the forum you sent me to, and navigated to the XSi450 page which has numerous verifications of an AF problem with folks returning their camera and lens for repair, or returning the camera for a refund. I noted that most of these people aren't noobs. I wish they were. I have to remind myself that the forum sees thousands of posts, so my question is what percentage of folks that bought an XSi are having the problems, and what are the chances that I will get a bad one? Or do all the cameras have an AF problem, but as some people don't usually use AF maybe they aren't aware there is a problem?

Hi everybody. First post. I got my XSi in mid summer and just found this site a few days ago. Anyway, I really like the camera. Here's a couple pics from this past vacation.

Very light editing. Just some sharpening, saturation and levels.
