I just biught an XSi for my wife and she loves it. The only thing is, she's new to DSLR's (as am I) and doesn't like the time it takes to down load to her laptop and upload to Photobucket (or other). I'm not familiar with the menu options but I'm sure there must be a way to reduce the size of the pic on the camera but I don't know how. Is it a resolution issue? I should probably post a question in a tech section, but if anyone could help here it would be appreciated by a newbie! Here's one of her first efforts.

Welcome to POTN. Stop using PhotoBucket, is the first tip!!! Use flickr, it is the best for photo upload and presentation!!! The quality of your photos wont drop!! And it's cheap too! Also I suggest getting a photo editor... Also do not be so hasty in trying to get Lenses... You must be patient and get a good one. I suggest the EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L or the EF 24-105mm IS f/4 L... You get what you pay for. I on the other hand am waiting till I have enough money to get my luxury Lens!! So in the mean time I would suggest learning everything and anything about your camera... Plus Practice Practice Practice!!! If you want to get good, Practice shooting pictures!! Experiment and read on the net about how to do stuff! Like MACRO or HDR, or may I suggest Portraits or action shots ( if you have kids!!) like sports or family gatherings... But if anything, be patient and keep trying.

I see a few say that the Xsi is over exposing and this is the hardest to fix..especially wedding dresses...how many have found over exposing?

When I use matrix or partial metering I notice that photoes taken outside are over exposing whites when mixed in with other colors and I have to dial down 1/3 to 2/3 stops to compensate for it. I tried out center weighted too and I *think* that metering doesn't over expose the white and close-to-white colors as badly. More testing will tell.

I have found that a little over exposure isn't too difficult to recover in PS from the XSi thanks to that 14bit A/D converter. Still, it does seem to have this tendency to burn out those whites so I think this is a legitimate concern and people should definitely turn on the hightlight warning as well as the RGP and luminance histagrams and watch them as they shoot. Learn the camera's tendencies and how to compensate for them.

Every camera model has its little quirks. I had an XTi for awhile and it had the opposite problem - underexposing. The 40D I used to own underexposed too in a lot of difference conditions. Whites in general are always a challenge anyway and I always frown a bit when I see a lot of white in a scene along with dark colors. I just know I'm going to have to bracket those shots.

I too think that center weighted seems to work slightly better, so I use it a lot.

Below are some photos taken with Canon 50mm f/1.4. I really like my 24-105L, but 50/1.4 made me realize how wonderful primes are and I use them almost exclusively now. :)

Thanks ;) It seems to be the general consensus

I've also been having problems with overexposure with Evaluative (matrix) metering. I've been experimenting with Auto ISO in Av and TV modes. If it still overexposes, I use Manual mode and -2/3 or -1 Exposure compensation

Those are some beautiful shots Helena! I esp. like the bottle and #3's "statue".

I do agree that there is a bit of overexposure w/ auto ISO, but I prefer choosing my own ISO. I rarely use evaluative; I prefer partial or spot metering myself, esp. for high contrast scenes. Manual mode is the way to go, but if you're in a pinch Av is good as well.
