Most people either have it or aregoing to get it soon when they have the funds it is so usful
1. extra battery (longer life)
2. Vertical shutter
3. heavier so makes the camera sturdier
4. stops it looking like a toy.
my 4 top best things about the grip.

Also if you find yourself without any battery power left the canon grip comes with a AA battery holder allowing you to use 6 AAs instead.

All in all well worth the cost!

I'm confused about the grip.
Cowboy studio lists the grip Canon BG-E5 Battery Grip For Rebel XSi, EOS 450D for $50 less than B & H but when you look at the pictures of the product Cowboy's doesn't show it with "CANON" on it and B&H does. How can they list it as a canon?

The Cowboy one looks like a clone whereas B&H looks like the real Canon.

Probably made in the same factory but might void your warranty if things go pop..

It was the first accessory I bought and it really is good. I don't use a strap so a good chunky base to hold is great for me. I know it isn't cheap but you will not regret buying it.

So is the grip mainly for ergonomic reasons? Does it still have the spot on the bottom to allow for the tripod adaptor?

Yes it has the hole for a tripod/monopod. For me with a long lens I think it balances out the two, and it makes it easy to carry upside down.

That's the main reason. The extra battery life and ability to use AA's in a pinch doesn't hurt. But for me, a good 80% of my pictures are portrait orientation, and it saves me the slight inconvenience of reaching my arm around instead of using both arms to brace myself for the shot. Every camera I own (or have owned in the recent past) I've put a grip on that I've never removed.

Buy the Opteka grip instead of the Canon one. Same exact thing, a fraction of the price, and it is awesome. Next to the nifty 50, it's the best 80 dollars I've spent in photography. It's got a nice solid rubber grip, two decent batteries, and the AA holder as well.

Yeah, it is exactly the same as the canon one except it lacks the canon logo. I've held them both side by side. Is that worth the extra $100? It wasn't to me, I went for the Opteka, I've had it for a fewmonths and couldn't be happier.
