So what's up with the NOISE on the 450D? Ive noticed anything above 400 ISO has a bad chromatic glare all over it, particularly in the shadow/dark areas. I expected more from this camera. The noise is somewhat like a powershot PS I've owned.

Great shots jgrussel! Thanks for sharing ;).

Thanks, all. I'm sure pleased at the way the camera handled the extreme conditions!!!

Great pics from jgrussell. You are giving this Newbie some hope. Going to Yellowstone in June and would kill for some shots like yours as memories. Thanks for sharing. Any tips???

There's no reason why you can't get fabulous shots with this camera. But there are several things to work on between now and June:

1. What lenses will you need? For wildlife you need long (100-400 is a great lens). For landscapes you need wide (10-22 is a great lens). For walkaround, the 17-55 is fabulous. Don't own 'em? No problem. Rent what you need. There are several places recommended often by forum members, including lensrentals.com (external link), lensprotogo.com (external link) and cameralensrentals.com (external link), where you can get whatever you want.

2. How about support? For many shots, including any with a long lens, you'll want a good tripod or, at a minimum, a monopod.

3. Get out and practice with the camera EVERY DAY between now and June. Get it off the green box and learn to use the manual settings. Play with different settings until you get a good feel for what f8 or f11 does versus f2.8 or f3.5 (big change in depth of field!) and for what 1/60th or 1/500th does (big change in whether you can capture action or not).

And the biggest piece of advice I can give: remember, when you get to Yellowstone, occasionally put the camera down. Don't spend all your time behind the viewfinder!

Maybe post some images?

Under-exposing the image will always increase noise.
Or, your camera may be defective.

I have nice shots taken at ISO 1600.

Well, I think underexposure makes luminance noise, right? ( correct me if I'm wrong )

The type of noise I'm talking about is the chroma noise, you can see it even in alot of the images online showing the 450D in above 400 ISO situations.

Just dissapointing that's all, I'm thinking about replacing my 450D for the 40D for better IQ. It just seems noisy, where the 40D samples I've seen and even some 400D blow it away. I think the big 12.2 MP sensor makes the noise worse on this camera.

The first two are very nice, you have the eye for it. Third seems a bit soft but I am sure you will be posting some amazing pics here.

Tip: Try and link to the pics direct as some might miss your shots especially when there have been a few pages between viewing this thread.

Hi

I was messing around with the panoramic feature and came up with the below shot. I took the shot with my Canon ef 70-200 2.8 with no tripod (my bad).

As good as that sounds, i think it's a bit far fetched.

" Information about the 500D varies, so it should be taken with a grain of salt. Besides, it seems that releasing the 500D now would essentially cannibalize their 40D and 50D"

I think that pretty much sums it up for me.

that is what i said. i think think itsnot worth the upgrade if you already have a 450d.

its pretty much an upgraded version with a 50d chip and 5d movie mode which i can careless.

future full frame crew!!!
