Generally, The number after "IMG_" in the file name dictates the number of shots you've taken. This number, however, won't help if you've resetted your number count. I don't keep count but I'm somewhere in the 6k range and I've had it since it was released.

Well, I frequently unload my 2GB SD card onto my PC. I found some recent ones I took and it appears I'm over the 2k mark. Then I also found a few of the first pics I took with the camera and the numbers started at over 800 so I don't know how that happened. Not a big deal though.

I think Canon is being cautious with the 5D upgrade. The current 5D is a standard-setter and admired across all brands and models. Canon doesn't want to release a 5D that disappoints.

I agree with you. I imagine that the Sony announcement w/ the supposed 24MP full frame by the end of this year along w/ the Nikon release of the D700 has caused Canon to reconsider some features on their 5D MkII. Even if the 5D mkII comes out to be less than amazing, I wouldn't jump ship due to the numerous lenses that are available to me as a Canon user.

If you used that card on a different camera prior to your XSi, the XSi may have continued where the card left off.

Great captures DonJuan! What program(s) are you using for post processing, if any?

I just bought my rebel today and I need alot of help lol. I want to know how to take pictures correctly and everything. I have the 18-55 lense and the 70-300mm lense. Any info on how to use my camera would be nice. I want to know how to take pictures at the right settings and everything. If anyone could point me in the right direction or something would be nice. Thanks much. Sorry if my post seems lame.

Canon has a pretty easy tutorial here (external link).

Also, the most-advised book here on POTN is "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson -- it's pretty widely available.

Also, there is a good series of camera-specific books authored by David Busch -- do a Google search for "450D David Busch" and you should get info about availability.

Read the "stickies" on this forum also, especially in the Talk About Photography section -- there's a lot of useful information there.

And, make sure you read the manual -- that's where the specific "how to" stuff is located for your camera. The Busch book will help to piece things from the manual together.

Welcome, and enjoy your hobby!

I just ordered the XSI and I am torn as to what SD card I want to get. What do you guys use? I was thinking of a 4G one. May be one of those Sandisks Extreme ones. Can anybody make any recomendations?

This is just personal preference. Your XSi has 12MP images, and on a 4G card you could get say ~200 RAW files (just a wild guess -- the manual will give you specifics). I shoot RAW, and I go for 8G cards with my 12MP 5D and 10MP 1D so I can be sure to get through a session, at least 2 or 3 hours, without having to swap cards. I do have to swap cards occasionally, though, so I have several backups.

Other people follow the "better safe than sorry" approach and have several smaller-capacity cards so if a card fails they still have some keepable images. Cards don't often fail, but when they do, of course, it's a PITA. You just have to make your own decision here.

I do seem to lug it around with me everyday... You just never know when you'll see something good. I've also attended a wedding and a company picnic since I got it, which accounted for a lot of the shots.

I shoot a little of everything and am learning what I like to shoot best and deciding what glass would best suit me. I travel somewhat often, and I'm thinking the 10-22mm will be my next major purchase, as I want to capture the landscapes and architecture I come across. I'm flying to Ireland on Friday, so I'm sure my count will continue to climb! ;)

Couldn't agree with the bolded statement more! I too carry my camera everyday. Right now I do a bit of shooting from the car during our commute (someone else is driving!) because I don't get out much during the day. :(

The lens and trip sound great. I hope you have a wonderful adventure over there!

Manual? What's a manual??? I gave up on that thing two minutes into it and just started pressing buttons to see what would happen.

I have the 4GB SanDisk Extreme and so far it's been enough. I can't compare quality between brands as I'm coming from a Sony P&S. I shoot 100% in RAW so I can get about 250 images on the disk (it might actually be a little less). Given how much I've been using the camera, I think I'm going to have to invest in a second 4GB or 8GB.

I did like that the card came with a USB plug (but all of them probably do).

I bought a 4GB Extreme SD card from someone locally who posted it on Craig's List. Earlier that day I had already committed to someone on ebay who needed a 2GB card (had a 2gb Ultra, traded for the 4GB Extreme plus $15 on my part) when I bought my camera and I'm very happy I ended up with two.

I used the 2GB ultra in my Canon S3IS and figured since I could take about 700 shots with a 6.1 MP camera, I would be able to get about 350 out of this one. NOPE! only 250, but I've never used up both cards on a shoot yet so if you're a casual shooter, you'll be fine with 2 4GB cards.

Two or three 4GB cards would be more than enough for an average day of shooting. If you shoot RAW tho, I'd recommend getting 8GB cards instead. You can go through a 4GB pretty quickly if you're shooting RAW. In a single full day of shooting I can do about 600 shots.

As for brand you can't go wrong w/ Sandisk. They have a rebate out atm for their Extreme III SD cards. If you do a search you'll be able to find em ;)
