I am in such a dilemma, I really want to buy a decent lens for wedding/party photography, what do you recommend? I personally would say the EF-S 17-55. There are some downsides, including a redundant range, but it has great IQ and is very versatile in challenging lighting. It gets pretty wide for group shots, but you may want a little more reach. What do you think of the 18-55mm range?

The 17-55 IS is a great lens for crop cameras, probably one of the best. It's wide enough for group shots, and has a decent length to get couple/half body shots. You'll probably want something a bit longer as well for tighter shots, so a 85mm f/1.8 or a 100mm f/2 would do the trick nicely. Personally, I tend to shoot a little long so I prefer the 24-70 over the 17-55, but the IS on the 17-55 lets you shoot sharper images in very low light.
